Community Legal Education

Community Legal Education (CLE) is the provision of information and education to members of the community on an individual or group basis, concerning legal issues and processes.

CLE aims to:

  • Raise the awareness of the community about laws and legal processes.
  • Increase the ability of the community to understand the impact of the law and the legal system on themselves and their community.
  • Improve the individual’s ability to manage personal legal or other issues and increase their understanding about how to access services and resources.
  • Create a climate for the community to participate in the process of law making and law reform, through consultation or collective action where appropriate.

Legal information is important because many people are powerless in particular situations primarily through lack of knowledge. Knowledge is power, which is CLE at its most basic level.

Legal education encourages consciousness raising and is driven by community needs.

We can tailor the information to meet specific needs of a community. Some examples of our CLE Sessions are;

  • Divorce
  • Guardianship and Administration
  • Tenancy
  • Keep Kids Safe (child sexual abuse prevention)
  • Financial literacy such as Budgeting
  • Wills and Estates
  • Property Settlement
  • Separation and children
  • Child Support

If your community or group would like to arrange a Community Legal Education session or workshop in your town contact our staff and they would be happy to discuss your needs.
